Gentle Prompts for Neurodivergent Kids in Photo Sessions (+ Free Download!)
Lets talk a bit about how every child experiences the world differently. I mean, this idea alone could fill a whole book (or twelve). It’s deep, it’s layered, it’s beautiful. But today? I want to deep dive into how neurodivergent kids wake up each day and experience a world that looks and feels completely different from what most people are used to - and how that plays out during a photoshoot.
Neurodivergence appears in so many ways (because yes, it’s complicated AF). In a photoshoot, that might look like your amazing kiddo needing unique sensory support, assisted communication, social scaffolding, or just a totally different vibe to feel comfortable. That doesn’t mean profesh photography is unavailable to you - not even close. Your chaotic, messy, wild, loved-up family joy? Absolutely perfect for a photoshoot.
Having a bit of lived experience (shout out to my amazing severely disabled kiddo), I am super passionate about creating epically inclusive, sensory-aware, safe-as-heck spaces so that everyone in your family can access professional photography.
Here’s the thing: sometimes the standard photography guidance and prompts simply don’t work - and that’s a-ok! With a few gentle shifts in language, pacing, and expectations - we can create a calmer and more connected experience that allows the whole family to engage in the photoshoot. And that’s when those raw, beautiful moments are captured on film forever.
One of the biggest mindset shifts I bring into sessions with neurodivergent kiddos? I remove all pressure on the kiddos - there is no expectation to have a conversation, look at me, follow instructions or do anything according to a ‘plan’. I am simply a guest in their world…and I wait to be invited in. And let me tell you - when they do? Boy oh boy is it special.
Neurodivergent kids are asked to bend and stretch to fit a world that often isn’t built for them. Not with me. In my photoshoots their consent matters and flexibility is key. Let’s build a safe environment for them - and for YOU, you amazing caring human. You deserve to feel just as safe and seen. Zero judgment here. Full support only. You’re doing an incredible job.
So, to spread a little more love and make your photo sessions easier, I’ve put together a free list of practical prompts (verbal and non-verbal) that I’ve used with neurodivergent kiddos - prompts that actually work (even if they seem a bit outside the box). Whether you’re prepping for a photoshoot or just want some ideas to snap your own sweet moments at home, this simple guide’s got your back.
