Scooter Rides and the Hunt for Chicken Nuggets

There wasn't a grand adventure planned. Nobody climbed mountains or ran through fields at sunset. We wandered a few suburban streets, admired an ever-growing collection of toy cars, shared a cuddle and waited for chicken nuggets. Which, when you're four, is a pretty excellent afternoon.

It all started at home with cups of tea and a playroom full of car tracks before a raincoat went on, a helmet was clipped up and a scooter appeared. From there we made our way towards the local food truck, racing each other along the footpath and stopping every now and then for another cuddle with Mum.

My favourite photographs weren't taken while anyone was doing anything at all. They happened while we waited. Waiting for nuggets to appear can be serious business when you're little, and over a few quiet minutes I photographed every tiny shift in expression. Turns out waiting for chicken nuggets is an emotional rollercoaster, and every single stage of it is written all over your face when you're four.

The afternoon ended exactly as it should have. Hot chips. Chicken nuggets. One very happy little boy.
